It's my one year anniversary today. A year ago my life changed, and I've come to realize it wasn't an end to my life, just a new beginning.

I've come a long way in a year. I was walking with a cane, though I was tiring easily, it was still a step in the right direction. I was becoming more and more independent, which was my goal. And I knew, getting a better prosthesis would help me eliminate some of the fears in walking I was hanging onto.

What a great Christmas present I got this year!!! A brand new leg!! (How many people can say that with a straight face?!!)

There was some adjustments I needed to face before I could say I was independent. One, was the pain in my stump with the new leg. I wore my new leg home from the prosthetists office and didn't take it off until I went to bed that night. My stump was sore, but I figured time was needed to adjust to the new fit. The new sleeve was a much tighter fit, something my stump wasn't use to, but I could live with that.

Oooowwwwwww! OMG! My stump hurt so bad this morning I couldn't get my leg on, at all!!! I tried for 10 minutes to get my stump into the bucket of my leg, but the soreness in my stump hurt so bad, there was no way!! I sat on the edge of the bed, mustering up enough courage to call my husband without tears. I was so frustrated and completely let down with this development, I was ready to toss my new leg out the window!

I finally gathered the courage to get angry instead of feel sorry for myself. Ed came into the bedroom and I told him my problem. He touched the end of my stump with care, and that simple touch sent me to the roof! On no!! What had happened? Why was my stump so painful???? He immediately got onto the phone to my prosthetist telling him what was happening.

My prosy doc said there would be some adjustment time to the new leg, which made sense really. My stump wasn't use to the tight confinement of the new sleeve, so it was matter of time. With Ed's help, I finally managed to get my leg on that morning. But I was faced with a stump so sore, once I got my leg on I could hardly take a step. But Ed came to my rescue. He suggested I use my walker when I needed to walk, which helped to decrease the pain in my stump and allowed me to use my new leg so I could get use to the new fit.

A great New Years gift to myself!! I can finally walk without pain! Yes!!! My prosy was right, I had to give myelf some time for my stump to get use to the new leg! And it did! I am one happy camper!

I was really looking forward to less snow this winter! Last winter in Muncie, IN was horrible. People were telling us it was the worse snow fall in decades! It was nice to know that our snow fall now would only be about 8-10 inches the entire winter! YES!! I love it! I'm not a snow bunny by nature, even when I had two good legs, but with only one, I hated it even more! But I could live with 8-10 inches of snow a year!

Well, they can shoot down the theory that this part of Ohio only has 8-10 inches of snow a year!! We've already been hit with 17 inches so far!! Where in the world is all this snow coming from??

To add insult to injury (no, not that kind of injury!), I got our car stuck in the driveway of our house!!! It took our son, my husband and a neighbor 50 minutes to get me unstuck! To say the least I was embarrassed beyond belief! I had to sit in the car the entire time because there was no way I was going to make it through the slush, ice and snow to house! But....I won't do that again! A friend came over and plowed our driveway for us, so I won't be getting stuck anytime soon! :-)

My stump is shrinking again! I can't believe it...but it is. I'm up to 23 plys of socks now so my prosy says he needs to make another bucket for me. So back I go!

March 4, 2001

I went to see my prosy doc this morning. He casted my stump again for the new socket. I'll tell you....walking isn't fun anymore with 23 plys! It sucks!

March 19, 2001

I am so upset! My new socket isn't ready yet and I'm fit to be tied!! It's been over two weeks since I was casted! I've called to talk to my prosy doc but he's on two weeks vacation! HELLO???? Anyone home?? Why wasn't I told I'd have to wait for him to go on vacation??? Better yet, why wasn't my bucket done BEFORE he went on vacation??? To say the least I am not a happy camper!!

March 30, 2001

I received a call from my prosy doc apologizing profusely about leaving me in the lurch! My first question to him was "How was your vacation?" He said he had a great time. Of course, that was just what I was looking for! "Well, I'm glad you had a good time, because the past 3 weeks have been hell on this end!!" I know, I was rude, but more important, I was pissed!

More to come....
